Central Queensland
Rockhampton is considered the beef capital of Australia, and is the gateway to Keppel Bay as
well as the Central West.
This city of 60,000 is on the Fitzroy River close to the Tropic of Capricorn and about 40km from the coast, and
is the administrative and commercial centre of central Queensland.
The Caves
The Mt Etna National Park 20km north of Rockhampton is the home of endangered ghost bats and little
bent wing bats.
The extensive caves are part of this limestone region which was formed 380 million years ago as a
fossilized coral reef, and some of them are open to the public.
Tours are available through Olsen's Capricorn Caves and Camoo Caves, both of which are a little north
of Rockhampton, not far from the Bruce highway.
